The Grand Hotel Hermitage is an enchanting 4-star hotel situated in Sant' Agata sui due Golfi, in a strategical position between Sorrento, Sorrento Coast and Amalfi Coast. Besides its breathtaking view, the location housing the Grand Hotel Hermitage offers interesting itineraries and noteworthy historical and architectural beauties.
The small town of Sant' Agata sui due Golfi, almost 7 km away from Sorrento and 400 metres above sea level, is a well-known holiday resort, one of the pearls on the Gulfs of Naples and Salerno in front of Capri.
Since the times of the "Grand Tour", just like Sorrento and the other resorts in Sorrento Coast, this place was one of the most longed-for and most frequently visited destinations. Among its religious Monuments, the church (16th century) is surely one of the most visited attractions for its Late-Renaissance structure and its very precious altar attributed to the Florentine school as of the 17th century. it is a masterpiece showing a very fine elaborated mother-of-pearl inlay, lapis lazuli, malachite and various kinds of precious marbles.

Sorrento Coast, also known as Mermaids' Land, is a place rich in history, culture and local folklore: it is told, in fact, that Etruskans, Greeks and Romans were charmed by the beauty of these places and lived for centuries on these woody heights.
This has been confirmed by the large necropolis present on the northern side of the hill. On these heights - as they were usually called, Sireniani Mountains - there was probably a sanctuary of Greek epoch dedicated to the Mermaids. Later on it was occupied by the Carmelite Fathers who built there a monastery which was called "Desert".
In particular in Roman times, the resort of Sant' Agata sui due Golfi became the coupling of the merchant traffic between the two gulfs.
S. Agata owes its name to a chapel built in the 16th century by family Festinese consecrated to the joung Sicilian Virgin. |
